Chapter Eleven

YOUR WARDROBE AND

YOUR WEAPONS

IHAVE TO CONFESS. As a young Christian I absolutely hated to hear sermons or read books about the armor of God. To me it smacked of knights in shining armor, Sir Lancelot, Guinevere, and King Arthur: cute, but certainly not relevant to me as a new Christian struggling to put my newfound faith into practice. Whenever my pastor waxed eloquent about the necessity of putting on the full armor of God, I’d stare back at him with a disdainful scowl on my face as if to say, “Why don’t you talk about something important?” Little did I know that the man was trying to save my life!

Learning how to put on the full armor of God is imperative. But talking or reading about it isn’t enough. Beyond learning about the armor of God, we need to do what God says and start using it. Let me ask you a straightforward question. Do you put on the full armor of God every day? If you are like most Christians (and if you answer honestly), you will probably say, “No, not really.”

Why not? Lack of knowledge? Laziness? Overconfidence? Whatever your excuse, forget it and make it a habit to “suit up” every day. Can you imagine a football player going out to play without wearing any pads and dressed only in his underwear? Oh, sure; the player might stay in the game for a few plays, as long as he didn’t get hit. But without the proper protection football can be a dangerous game.

We’ve already seen that spiritual warfare is much more serious than a football game. How much more then do we need to put on the right outfit if we hope to succeed in defeating the enemy?

WHY SHOULD I PUT ON ARMOR?

The apostle Paul gives us two simple reasons we need to put on the armor of God. First, in Ephesians 6:11, he writes: “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”

If you turn Paul’s statement around, it is clear that if you do not put on the whole armor of God, you won’t be able to stand against the deceptive schemes of Satan. We’ve already established that the devil doesn’t fight fairly but delights in pulling dirty tricks on you. How are you going to stand against that stuff if you are unprotected?

The second reason Paul tells us to put on the full armor of God is in verse 13: “Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.” Notice, you are to put on the full armor of God. It will do you little good to put on only a portion of your protection. Satan has an uncanny ability to find and play upon your weaknesses. If you are unprotected in a particular area, the devil will attempt to exploit you in that vulnerable place.
